Dance Australia Kate Blog

Last Sunday I had an absolute ball performing the Rumba with Rhys. I'd had an obsession with learning a Ballroom routine on the show, so learning from Jason Gilkison was a dream come true. So happy I've been here long enough to do that! It got a great reaction from the judges, which was cool. Nacho Pop's girls' routine didn't go down as well, but we had a fun time doing it. I don't know what's with me and Hip Hop lately - I'm the Hip Hop queen! – but strangely I'm still not even that comfortable with it. I'm constantly getting it, so it's a challenge. It's not completely me, but Demi helped me out which was great. We had fun.

Monday night was the best night so far – I can't believe I was safe straight away, I was stunned, shocked, ecstatic… My friends and family were the same – I just couldn't believe it. It was great all of us got to do our solos, all of us were on a high, there was such a great vibe. It was hard saying goodbye to Graeme and Vanessa, but they were both so happy with how far they've come. I was absolutely so proud of them, but it's only a week till we see them again, so it wasn't was tough as usual.

This week has been has been a blur. We've had to learn so much chorey. All my routines are really tough, but in the same breathe, all four of us are so happy to still be here. We're embracing the challenge.

This week we had some cool press things come up which has been fun. It's just so exciting to be in the Top 4 – it's a dream come through. I'm just stunned, all my friends can't believe it, they keep saying, ‘I can't believe it! I can't believe you're still there!'. I've had such a different journey from the other three here with, but I wouldn't change a thing -  of course, you only say that looking back!

This week has been hardcore. There's really so much going in our brains, all of us are very stressed and worried about forgetting chorey. There are so many steps we have to learn in such a short amount of time – the pressure's on for us to get out there and come through with the goods. It's the last time you get to vote for us, so it'd be nice to finish on a high no matter what happens. And the rest is up to you, so enjoy!

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported me, it truly means so much. I  hope you enjoyed the series as much as I have, and thank you for supporting dance in general.

Take care, lots of love, Kate.

I'd spend the $200,000 on: a house with my partner – as we all know, house prices in Australia - and especially Sydney – have gone up. I'd also go on a little holiday with my Mum and Dad – they deserve it.

Sunday was great! I hope everyone enjoyed watching the show, as it was a really good week for Jack and I. I enjoyed learning the Quickstep, and Supple's ‘Singing in the Rain' routine was a real treat, I was blessed to have it. I was really happy with the judges' comments and all the other feedback we got was really positive. All in all, it was a great week for me. Getting through to Top 6 was just awesome. I was sad to see Rhi and Henry go, but we're getting down to the minimal numbers now, at this stage everyone is going home sooner or later. But we're all back together soon, which is very exciting and something to look forward to.

Moving right along, there's even more challenges this week – I can't tell you any more info, but I learnt a new skill, which is fantastic, and why I entered the competition in the first place. It's been a physically draining week, but I really love my duo, love my partner, and love love love my choreographer! We also have another surprise for you all, and all in all it's been a very fun week. Can't believe I'm in the Top 6, I just can't believe it!

We were at Nova this morning which really cool. We met Kate Ritchie, and Merrick and Rosso, which was really cool. Kate really enjoys show, and gives us a good rap most weeks. I had a photo with her, she was just lovely.

I'm really excited about Sunday show. This decision on Monday is gonna be really difficult. A lot rides on tonight's performance, we have to pull out our best. I'm gonna enjoy the weekend and doing the group routine, but it's all coming to an end no matter when you go. Thank you and hello to anyone that's supporting me, I really appreciate it. Thank you for voting, I'm having a blast!

My best friend is: my boyfriend Michael. He's the best. I could go on and on all day, but I won't – he's just the best! We have the most fun together – he's just the coolest.

Sunday's night show was wonderful – Rhys and I were really worried about our Hip Hop as it was really difficult, but we pulled it off. We got great judges' comments, which felt so good – we were quite proud of ourselves! We've had really great feedback on the choreography, and so many people loved the routine, so we were wrapt!
Different story with my solo! I didn't think it was too bad, but it didn't impress Bonnie, and Jason said he wanted to see more. It's hard because I've done so many solos, but it's definitely something to work on this week.

It was big Hip Hop week overall for me, as we had Nacho Pop choreographing the group performance which was very cool. It was very different for all of us, it was real Hip Hop. He bought some help in, some b-boys and some breakers, so we all learnt a lot which was really cool.

I couldn't be happy with Monday night. It was my third time of being safe, which makes it three times in and thee times out of the bottom three; I was so happy! Also I was the second one to get my verdict, so I didn't have to wait and stress out, which was unreal. It was really sad to see Jemma and Ant go – Ant was a close friend, but everyone's back in two weeks anyway, so we all can't wait for that.

To be frank, this week has been torturous and extremely challenging. Wouldn't change it for the world, but we've been handed two routines and another partner, and I'm not the only to say it's been the toughest week yet. Both styles are completely out of my genre. Sunday's nights show is set to be a big challenge for everyone.
Big shout out to every single person who dialed ‘Kate' on Sunday night and Monday – I can't thank you enough. I'm extremely elated and honoured to still be here, and it's all because of you. I'm really focusing now on Top 6 – hopefully my journey's got a couple more weeks left in it because I'm having a blast!

In answer to your questions:
Krafty: My starsign is Scorpio.
eclairebaker: If I turned gay for anyone it'd be Angelina Jolie, because she's amazing.
If I could dance with anyone in the Top 20: I'd love to do a Latin with Henry. I've never done a Ballroom dance properly before. I'd love to learn it from him, because I think he's amazing at what he does!

Doing Leah's Jazz routine was probably one of the stressful weeks of my career, because of the injury to my neck. I've never been so unrehearsed, especially not in front of 1.8 million viewers. Thank god I didn't so any serious damage, but it's a performance experience I hope never to have again. Graeme was just wonderful all week. There was a time when I didn't think I'd be going on in the competition and he was just so supportive. We got really great comments from the judges, and while we were in the bottom three, we both felt like we did really well and really accomplished something.

Monday night was extremely nerve racking. All twelve of us wanted it much more than we usually do, and not making Top 10 would have been shattering. Like the judges said, no matter who went, good dancers were going. I really felt for J.D. and Camilla. Being in the bottom three was heart breaking, but 50% of us were there - the odds are getting smaller and smaller!

Top 10 is just awesome. I set my goals and I'm achieving them. I'm very appreciative of the judges keeping me here. I hope I'm growing, and showing why they kept me. I hope Australia will keep supporting me, now that it's all up to them!

Now we're in Top 10, we've all bonded more. Thank god for Easter! We did some really great photoshoots. One was in a $17 million house in Rose Bay. The lady was lovely, put a big spread on for us – it was so good not to be tired and stressed about choreography. We went bowling care of Famous magazine, which was great. And we did Who magazine's Beautiful People shoot for Natalie.

Just had a great Easter break, and am now really raring and pumping to go. This week another big challenge - it doesn't get any easier, that's for sure! This is the most intricate routine I've had so far, and yes, we'll definitely be rehearsing after hours. Can't wait to do my solo on Sunday night. It's gonna be a really great show, showcasing us as individual dancers, which is a change from how coupley it's been so far. I'll be giving 150% - the rest is out of my control!

The movie I could live in is: Dirty Dancing, because I'd like to go to summer camp and never leave, and dance with Patrick Swayze carrying watermelons.

Getting Contemporary last week was really wonderful for Graeme and I – it was a massive challenge but Debbie Ellis gave us a beautiful routine, which we were very lucky to get. It was very grueling for both of us, but it really paid off. The crowd enjoyed it, the public enjoyed it and the judges enjoyed it, so it was a super show for us! We really got right into character, so much so that a few people thought something was wrong at the end, but it just took a while to get out of. We were very appreciative of the judges' comments, they were lovely to hear.

Monday wasn't as sad as it usually is for me – Graeme and I were so happy that our routine had gotten us out of the bottom three again. The routine was so hard, and if we had been there, we wouldn't have known what could have kept us out. Lucky for us we were safe!

It was sad to see Laura and Suri go, but I'm so proud of them. They overcame the challenges they set for themselves, and bowed out gracefully. They left with a smile, which was nice to see. I miss Laura, she was my roomy, and now Rhys will move in.

I can't tell you the genre we picked this week, but I can tell you I was happy to pick it out! It's another challenge as the routine is not easy. I've hurt my neck today, but I'm sure it'll be fine by tomorrow – a grueling couple of days ahead.

Graeme and I have  really bonded - the three routines we've got to do together have been a blessing, as I think Graeme's fantastic.

In high school I was: lovely! I was nice in high school, but to be honest I wasn't always there, I was always at dance class!

It's a real confidence boost not being in the bottom three – it's definitely made my week a lot more positive. I feel happy about our performance, and that the general public have embraced who I am – it's a nice feeling. I really want to thank anyone who picked up the phone and voted – I really appreciate it!

Bollywood was a lot of fun – Graeme and I tried to make it as fun as we could. It was good to have a different routine, with different characters, in a different genre. It was great the audience liked it and surprising that, of all things, it pulled us out of the bottom three! I really enjoyed the group routine this week, choreographed by Jason Gilkison. I think he's a real inspiration, what he's done to Ballroom – it's a hip dance now. In my career outside the show, I'd never cross paths with him, so it's been a real honor.

I miss my flatmate Marko – he used to make me laugh so much. I'm not sure if it came across on the telly, but he was definitely the comedian of the group, 24\7. The same with Steph – he used to take the piss out of her and she loved it – they were a great couple. So it was a big shock being safe, I was so excited and happy, then an hour later, I was like, ‘What is going on? He's gone!' Laura's moved in this week as she was flatting with Steph. It'll be a girly house.

Now it's a whole new week for us: Graeme and I are definitely challenging ourselves – this will be the hardest week for me. There's a lot of work to do between now and Sunday, so my aim is to stay really focused.

We all went to an Asian restaurant this week called Gung Ho. The beautiful owners invited the Top 20 to a buffet dinner. It was so nice, and they went to so much trouble. It was lovely to go out and eat something together.

You really feel the group's gotten so much smaller now. We'll be sitting around waiting for the bus and be like, ‘Are we missing people?' But we're not. It just feels lot smaller. There's a bit more pressure as it's divided amongst less people. There are so many shock exits – I have no idea how the public will vote, no idea how the judges will vote. I feel like I'm always hanging by a thread, but that's good – you have to work hard every second. If you let your guard down you'll get kicked out straight away.

You can always make me happy by: taking me to a dance class. If I'm sad, I'll go and it'll make me so much happier. Is that corny?

Dance Australia Kate Third Entry

I'm on this really, really scary rollercoaster right now and I can't get off. I don't want to but it keeps scaring me, and then it's OK. Week three, partner three, Dance For Your Life two! It was a really shocking week for me – it wasn't that I expected Khaly to go, but someone had to. Then when I got Hilton as a partner I felt safe – he was so popular, a wonderful dancer and we did what I thought was a great routine. So there was a little bit of comfort, that went absolutely, horribly wrong. Seeing Hilton and Kassy leave crushed a lot of us, and it's been a bit difficult to get back to feeling positive. But it could have been me, and I'm happy and appreciative to be here. Having Graeme as a partner is wonderful, as he's going through same as me. Kassy and him were good friends and had a great time together as partners. We're trying to have a laugh, and I know our style will make people laugh and clap, and maybe vote - haha! I'm extremely grateful to still be here, and am focusing on having fun.  I'm putting in 150% every week and I'm glad it's getting over me the line.

Ideal person play you in a biopic: Rachel Weisz. My ex-boyfriend said I looked like her – she's a lot more beautiful, and she makes good film choices

So You Think You Can Dance - Kate's Second Entry

Sunday night was really exciting, a lot of adrenaline pumping backstage. It was a blast doing my first performance with Khaly. Our comments were good, then not so good, but we still had a lot of fun. Then the dreaded Monday! Monday was really hard. Being in the bottom three wasn't a huge shock, everyone did so well, it could have been anyone.

Dancing For My Life was really intense and full on. I was pleasantly happy to be kept on for another week – but losing my lovely partner was really sad. It was a double whammy, because I also lost my roommate, I lost Courtney! Now I'm living with Marco, so it's been a whole new adventure this week. Monday was really hard to get over, but I've been having great rehearsals with my new partner Hilton all week.

We really had to jump in the deep end, cuz everyone else has already had one week with their partner. It's definitely been up and down this week, but that's So You Think You Can Dance. We've been working really hard, hanging out a bit, and now we can't wait to show you what we've got!

Biggest misconception about dancers: Dancers don't eat. Have you seen the chocolate in our dressing room?!

Dance - Kate's Blog

SYTYCD filled our fridge and pantry, so I've been cooking a lot at home. I'm sharing with Courtney and we're both very health conscious. She's veggie, I'm not, so we make lots veggie salads, burritos, chicken salad, salmon pasta – all the good stuff! We're both home bodies and very clean. She's been really easy to live with someone – it's strange to go from not knowing someone at all to, ‘Hi, I'm living with you', but it's been  great. Other than  that we've been rehearsing, swimming in the spa and getting massages. We've been down to Chinatown, we went out one night to a sushi train and had a glass of nice red at the pub across the road, which was funny – it was a real old-school pub with counter meals. Been doing a bit of shopping at Market City and Paddys Markets – can't resist a bargain! I had a date with my boyfriend on Thursday night – we're having a weekly date now that we're not living together!

We all hung out the other night and watched the show, which was great. Last week, it was just the two of us. The competition is what I thought it would be like - it's a little more intense, and living it is a different from what I thought. I feel like we're living in a bubble, in that we get driven around and we all live together. We haven't been exposed to the hype yet – they tell us it's rating well, which is great. But as far as reading whether it's good or bad, we're really just living it, which is nice.

I have a wicked partner – he's been awesome to get to know. We come from completely different worlds, but we both bring something unique to our partnership. He's as strong as anything and we get along really well. We take it seriously, but we're really excited. I  hope the audience can read what we've been doing and see our enjoyment. Plus I think the ladies will like him cuz he's a cutie!

I've been hanging out with Marko and Anthony – they keep me laughing until all hours! The three of us are very close, it's good experiencing the same journey and having people to talk to about how it's all going.

I'm feeling great about first live show. On the day I'll be nervous: the lead-up seems to be taking a long time and we're all revving to go. I saw the stage for the first time today and it's wicked. My costume, everything looks amazing. I'm jumping out of skin raring to go!

Fave dance movie: Flashdance – It's iconic 80s dance. Jennifer Beals is unreal!
